COSMOPOLITAN CRICKET CLUB
The
history of our Club goes back to 1983.In July that year a Pakistani
doctor (Dr.A.Sadick) who was working in a village Etschberg (near
Kusel/Kaiserslautern Palatinate,S.W.Germany)met an Englishman, Malcolm
Lane, and told him about his interest in Cricket. The two got in touch
with the <British Army Support Unit which was attached to the
American Forces at Ramstein.Interest in Cricket was revived and the
idea to form a Cricket Club was born. Things soon began to take shape
and by the beginning of 1984 ETSCHBERG Cricket Club was formed. Regular
practice sessions with the British Army were conducted and the club
began to flourish with members from England, Pakistan and West Indies.
The first match was played against the Frankfurt Cricket Club in May
1984 at the Etschberg Sport Platz; this was followed by a game against
the visiting Sri Lankan Cricket Club of Zürich(Switzerland) and some
more home games and one away game in Switzerland.
In 1985 the ECC came in contact with a group of cricketers(among them
some students from the University of Heidelberg)who were trying to form
a team. The two teams were amalgamated and a new club by the name of
COSMOPOLITAN Cricket Club was formed. Etschberg was too far from
Heidelberg and the ground there was too small for cricket.Through the
efforts of late doctor Khalid Sadick and the courtesy of “Gemeinde
Haßloch” we were able to get a grass ground with good facilities in
Haßloch so the venue of the club was shifted to Hassloch(near
Ludwigshafen/Rhein, also Palatinate) Among the founder members were 2
medical doctors and a dental doctor so we were well prepared for
different injuries. We started playing regularly and friendly matches
were organised on regular basis with home and away fixtures.
In
Sept.85 the Club took part for the first time in the competitive
cricket in "Munich Knockout Competition". For this we had to travel to
Munich 340 km away. Although we played well (in the following year
also) the whole adventure was too risky(in case we get knocked out in
the first game) so we decided to take part instead in the Munich League
from 1987 onwards.
In 1988 Deutscher Cricket Bund( DCB = German Cricket Association )was
founded,of which we are a founder member. In this year Rhein Main
Neckar League(=RMNL) started ,in which we played. Although we took part
in Munich League also the RMNL suited us geographically better. in the
late summer of 88 we won the First German Tournament.
In 1989 we took part in the DCB First Indoor Tournament. In this
year we played in Munich League for the last time- three tournaments
which involved a lot of travelling and money were getting too much for
the members. In this year we also took part in the European Club
Cricket Festival organised by the City of Durham (July 88). Since then
we have been active playing games at home and away games with a
traditional away game in Switzerland against the Sri Lankans C C Zurich
Social and cultural side- we have /had players from most of the
cricket playing countries e.g Australia, Bangladesh, England, Germany,
India, Newzealand Pakistan, South africa Sri Lanka and West Indies..
